ARML Summer 2025 Session 1 Review Session1-Game1 (1)

07-21-2025

After a weekend's distillation (seriously), I come sit down at the table and trying to make this review happen. I think this is a good practice to go over the league games. I want to make records about this as well. ARML uses Tenhou and it's really well logged, so I feel like this is the correct thing to do. East coast pro players are planning on doing reviews for internal games, so that will probably be here in the future (don't quote me on that)

Okay, thus, this will be the first post about the ARML review. Each post will be about one hanchan. Since I'm the one doing review for my own play, I will go through each hanchan as a spectator and compare my decision now and then (I will try). Also, I will consult NAGA during the review, the benchmark NAGA will be the balanced one (ニシキ), and I personally find one that probably fits my style to calibrate my style: defensive (ガンマ). At the beginning of the review, the current division, current points will be recorded, (I lost track of the standing but I will remember to record the standing in the future sessions). At the end, a conclusion will be made, and the NAGA conclusion pages will be attached.

OH right, only the decisions that has a major mismatch will be talked about. Since we introduced the structural stuff, let's get started!

Standing points: Division C1, 0.0 points

Rule that matters: Akanashi

Game Review

East 1: North, Dora 5p

Defensive NAGA Chose 1P
Defensive NAGA Chose 1P

Toimen quickly ponned West and Green dragon and discarded 8m and 1p, respectively. We have a pair of East in hand. Before the draw we are at standard hand 3-shanten, and the 4p draw makes our hand proceed in shanten. Naga here selects 1P rather than proceeding in shanten. Balanced NAGA chose 1P over 4M with a small margin, and defensive NAGA toss 1P with no hesitation. I chose, and choose to take this 2-shanten here. Now that NAGA mentions the option of folding here, that makes me rethink if folding is actually better here.

First, assessing the value of our hand at this point, if we take the two shanten, we are going to either wait on the 2p or 2s, both are kanchan shapes. The 13p kanchan almost has no room for upgrade since two of the 4p are used by me as the pair, thus almost makes it hard to accept dora 5p. We are less likely to riichi mostly because the wait are kind of bad and we don't have value (can't see either pinfu or dora). Ittsu is also 3-shanten even if we keep the 13p as a block. In conclusion, the 2-shanten hand has no value, and it has no speed advantage against toimen's double fuuro. Not to mention if we get tenpai with the current five blocks, we have to discard a dangerous souzu tile. It's better keeping the souzu in hand after all this. Even we want to take this 2-shanten, probably 7p is better because of the 6p->1p tedashi, makes 7p relatively safer.

Balance NAGA: 6s
Balance NAGA: 6s

After kamicha pushed a 6s, it makes sense to toss the lone tile 6s here, to avoid having to force pushing 6s later. We don't know if toimen is tenpai yet, but at least we see the 3p->1p->9p tedashi, signals a half flush, and they have been tsumogiri for two rounds. At the same time, kamicha pushed two of the no-suji 68s, shimocha(dealer) pushed a no-suji 4s. They are both pushing, and our hand is still 2-shanten. Maybe this is the best chance to utilize the temporary furiten to discard this 6s. The only argument is go for the ittsu in souzu. In order to get there, we might be looking at tossing 137p, and keeping the 4p and East as pair candidates, still, in this case, it's still at most a 2 han hand, slow and needs a lot of good draws, versus a almost confirmed 3 han hand, and have no safe tile to fold from kami/shimo.

Balanced NAGA choose: 6s
Balanced NAGA choose: 6s

Similarly, the unseen white got drawn, at least all agree this is not getting tossed, and 6s is good enough here since it's a more expensive side if it deals in in the future. Toimen has been tsumogiri since the 6s past, the 6s should go now. I think at this point we are fully folding, so discard the bombs before it starts ticking again.

To be continued tomorrow...
